This little skipper butterfly is on the brink of extinction, occurring close to home in the Pelican Park section of False Bay Nature Reserve (FBNR), located between Muizenberg and Strandfontein on the Cape Peninsula. The Barber’s Cape Flats Ranger previously occurred in the area around Steenberg railway station some decades ago, however the habitat in this area has been destroyed by housing development, leaving the FBNR as its only known locality.

Whats for dinner if the butterfly goes extinct?

The Barber’s Cape Flat Ranger (Kedestes barberae buntu) is by no means the worlds most beautiful butterfly, but the two species occur in our sensitive Reserve, and The Friends would like to keep it that way. If we don’t save this species, then which species will become extinct next ? Join us, The Friends of Zeekoevlei & Rondevlei, on Thursday to get the update on the project to save them.
