10 Jan 2017 Posted by in Environment, News and Events | Comments

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a happy festive season!

To kick off the year we will be hosting an informative talk on the Barber’s Cape Flats Ranger (Kedestes barberae bunta) by Ismat Adams.

This little skipper butterfly is on the brink of extinction, occurring close to home in the Pelican Park section of False Bay Nature Reserve (FBNR), located between Muizenberg and Strandfontein on the Cape Peninsula. The Barber’s Cape Flats Ranger previously occurred in the area around Steenberg railway station some decades ago, however the habitat in this area has been destroyed by housing development, leaving the FBNR as its only known locality.

Ismat has been doing his Masters through UCT on this endangered butterfly and will be talking more on his research, which will be utilised to compile a management plan for K. b. bunta. This management plan will then be used to aid in the recovery of this precious endemic and draw it back from the brink of extinction.
