Recycling Zeekoevlei style

29 May Posted by in Environment | 5 comments

Good news indeed !

Now all post consumer (that means after you have bought and used it) Polystyrene (rigid as in yoghurt containers and expanded as in “take away food boxes and veggie trays”) are now readily recyclable irrespective of colour in South Africa. Please people take ALL your mixed recyclables (they can be ALL mixed as long as they are dry and clean) such as:

Paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, plastics, cans, tins, glass bottles, …and polystyrene (also a plastic) to the local drop off centre at the scouts hall on Victoria Road…??

This a word from Envirosense our local Recycle queen and environmental warrior Susanne Karcher.

I might add that if you check my wheelie bin on a Wednesday morning you will see less than 1 black bag in the bottom (and its half dog poo), its really not difficult to achieve this, a bag, a plastic tub and 2 milk crates outside my back door and I even sort it for them, I pass the scout hall almost daily.

Recycling is one of the easiest things we can do to minimise our impact on the planet – especially since we have a recycling drop-off right on our doorstep! Granted there is only me in my household, but I compost all food waste and maybe put out my non-recyclables for collection every second month!

Excellent news! I take all our household recycling to the depot at the entrance to Victoria rd. Sometimes I despair and wonder if it makes a difference, but I am Grateful iwhen I see people working there to help organise human waste. This morning the rubbish truck was driving by- not their usual day – and I asked them to empty the public bin at the end of Victoria rd. They obliged with smiles – happy me!

Sorry my English – I’m from Switzerland and only since 6 months here in Zeekoevlei. I am happy to hear about separated recycling because in Switzerland we have 12 different boxes with wholes. The glasses are separated in white, green and brown and also paper, carton, batteries, 3 different plastics can be seperated. I bring these things also always to the depot and the people help me always quickli to unload. Thanks to all.

I love all your motivation and enthusiasm on the subject. Please all keep recycling vleibs- it might become mandatory anyway in the near future as we run out of landfill space very rapidly.

If you have any question where to take any other type of MATERIAL (that is what we need to start calling it) please drop me an email. envirosense@xsinet.co.za.

Happy to help. X from the “Optimised Materials Managment Queen”- aka Susanne KARCHER (my previous married name Dittke is now officially recycled ;-)))

Great news – but if only everyone would recycle!!! We have bins outside the kitchen and all the washed cans, milk bottles etc etc go into it and I drop off at Victoria Road. The Scouts also get a cut from the recycling.
