Grysbok sightings around Zeekoevlei

21 Aug Posted by in Environment | Comments

Please could you pass this message onto residents & Friends for us?

At the moment we are receiving many reports of grysbok sightings around Zeekoevlei, especially along Peninsula & Victoria Road. The reason for the increased visibility of these animals is that they are moving around in search of mates at the moment. Residents are asked to please drive slowly around the neighbourhood as the bokkies often cross the road erratically and we have already had one animal knocked by a vehicle.

Cape Grysbok

The movement of grysbok outside of the reserve boundary is normal behaviour, especially since we have resident grysbok in open areas such as along the weir road & in van Blommenstein Park.

Sightings of animals alongside roads need not be reported to the reserve / the after-hours cell number (083 499 1717) as an emergency, unless an animal is injured or in some kind of physical danger (e.g. pursued by dogs / people, or knocked down by a vehicle etc.).

We do appreciate everyone’s concern & assistance, but just don’t want anyone to panic unnecessarily about seeing grysbokkies around the neighbourhood.

Thanks very much!
