THE WORK GOES ON!
The rains are upon us and the Park is thankfully receiving the welcome nourishment! The ‘draw down’ has meant that we have been able to make further headway with the shoreline management plan (SMP see below). The plan has been approved by Rondevlei and Zeekoevlei management and really involves the opening up the Van Blommestein lagoon, separating the banks of reeds from those of the bulrushes, opening up four access points to the water and isolating the Commelina from the shore line. As you can see this is a huge task and any extra hands would be welcome. There is very little litter now being dropped and the Cobra Lilies Chasmanthe Floribunde are providing a splash of colour.
GENEROUS SPONSORSHIP!
Ilse Menke has very generously agreed to give a percentage of the proceeds from her fabulous clothing sale towards the stipend of Chance Bizweck, who is working 2 days a week in the park, and towards the purchase of some more plants. Please support her clothing sale which this month runs from today 8th to the 10th of June. Ilse has already sponsored Chance for 2 months! Let me know if you would like to take a chance on Chance at R1200 for another month!
I’m pleased to say that Cape Nature has also provided one more worker for the park until the end of June!
RECOGNITION
Van Blommestein Park has been accepted as an Associate member of the International Quiet Garden Movement. This is a network of places around the world that provide therapeutic landscapes where people can receive the spiritual nourishment their soul longs for. We will be placing more tree trunks for sitting in some of the more meditative spaces and of course gently shaping the landscape accordingly.
APOLOGIES
I apologise for the large pile of waste at Victoria Junction both Josh and Assief have promised that the Council will be removing it very soon. (You can even see it on Google earth!)
LOOK OUT!
There have been reports of quad bikes and trail bikes being seen in the park at weekends – if you see any sign of that, you can speak sternly to the culprits or give me a phone on my cell. Obviously we do not want that particular activity in Park.
YOU CAN HELP!
If you would like to be part of this life giving project in the heart of Zeekoevlei – you can make a donation, or you can donate some fynbos plants or trees, or you can offer your gardener for a day or two to assist in the shore management plan. I also need help from the engineers in lifting a stone (OK a rock!) at Fisherman’s Rest. Phone 082 7333 500
If you can’t do any of these things then please take the time just to take a walk and enjoy the tranquillity of Van Blommestein Park – ‘the sun will come out tomorrow!’
