NOTICE RE: DRAWDOWN OF ZEEKOEVLEI (April 2021) AND SHORELINE MAINTENANCE
The Management of False Bay Nature Reserve would like to inform residents that the Zeekoevlei weir will be opened on 27 April 2021 for the annual drawdown of the wetland. Actual time will be communicated early next week. This intervention is carried out to allow the vlei to be drained of excess nutrients during the winter rainfall period. The lowered water levels also allow for easier access, to remove litter and excess reeds from the vlei.
The Zeekoevlei weir will be closed on 30 June 2021 However, this date is flexible read more …

Market Feedback – Yesterday 11th April 2021
After the usual frantic setting up, trading started at 09.00 and for the first 40 minutes things were very, very quiet and some of the committee members frowned and said …. Hey, was it a mistake to not open on the 1st Sunday of the month as usual? Where were the residents and other people who always frequented the market in search of the great bargains and socialising within the Covid regulations?
Eish ….. by 09.45 all that changed soooo quickly…. people started making their way to the market and we could see the difference immediately …… the Buzz was back! The ever popular boat rides on our amazing vlei was in full swing with the Boat Control Centre taking bookings fervently and making sure that the skippers were worked none stop. No rest for the skippers as people really wanted to see our environment and the results of all our hard work as an organisation. People were milling around the stalls looking for bargains as usual.
The market was a huge success once again and the comment below typifies the feedback received from various sources …..

BIG LOTUS CLEANUP – ON NOW!
A contractor has been appointed by the CoCT to tackle the tons of dirt that is in the BIG LOTUS and they have commenced last week.
WOW! The difference is seen immediately as about 30 workers descend into the river to remove the litter. The great news is that they are not just taking out the floating dirt, but using pitchforks to toss over the dirt that had become embedded into the river floors….. scary stuff coming out!
All the vegetation that had started growing in the river, causes blockages and a place for the litter to collect, is removed. The river banks overgrown grass gets cut back completely ………. looking great at the moment!
If it had rained in the last couple of days, that existing dirt would have found its way into our beloved environment ! So a huge thanks to our partners (FBNR, Storm Water – Mr Abdulla Parker’s section and FoZR) for the collaboration in really trying to assist mother nature as well.
Here are some before and after pics so that you get a clearer understanding of the immense challenge the contractor (CHURCHILLS ) face ….
2nd area in Big Lotus that they made a huge difference with the deep clean process –
