Weir Closes TODAY – and Litter report

Greetings all …

Interesting points below for your attention …

  1. Feedback from our FNR colleagues are that the weir will definitely be closed today and the impact on our environment has been positive, even for the shorter period that the water has been allowed to flow out to the ocean.

Wow! All we need now, is more rain and the lockdown rules to change to allow sailing! Yippee!

2. The collaboration between CoCT , Litterboom and FOZR will result in two more litter catching initiatives being installed at both Lotus river mouths this week as well. What has been months of planning, and delays by the Covid pandemic, is going to happen and this is o exciting for all parties.

The CEO, Cameron stated:

Initiated in 2017, The Litterboom Project – TLP – was the pilot phase of our solution to alleviating the increase in marine plastic pollution, by targeting the river systems, instead of dealing with it only at the oceans.

?90% of marine plastic pollution comes from river systems and we, at the TLP team, have therefore devoted ourselves to this preventative solution.

Over the past year and a half, we have successfully been able to prevent 120 000kgs of plastic from reaching the ocean through the hard work of a very small team. ?

We believe that true intervention starts with the public citizens engaging with meaningful projects such as this, be it sacrificing time to join us for clean-ups or donating to our cause. Every little bit helps a tremendous amount.

The physical solution is simple. We use a large pipe that we anchor across the river, which acts as a catchment for all surface level plastics- which are predominantly HDPE and PET.

This preventative measure is set up strategically where it can collect the most rubbish and where our team collect, sort and send the plastic off for recycling.

This solution is something that continues to evolve, however we are incredibly happy with how much of an impact it has made on the water quality and the quantity of plastic we have prevented being pushed into the ocean!
