Father John Oliver – In our hearts forever

05 Jul Posted by in News and Events | 7 comments

John OliverLong-time resident of Zeekoevlei, Father John Oliver (65), passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Thursday morning, 4 July.

Father John made his mark on the greater Cape Town community as well as on his home turf of Zeekoevlei.

He was the founder of the Cape Town Interfaith Initiative and had recently retired after 18 years as rector of St Mark’s Church in District 6. In an article by Michelle Jones in the Cape Times on Friday 5 July, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille spoke for the many people whose lives he touched over the years. ‘Father Oliver was one of the city’s distinguished religious leaders who used the gospel to mediate wherever divisions existed in different communities. He played an instrumental role uniting religious leaders in the city and province through the formation of the Western Cape Religious Leaders’ Forum,’ de Lille said.

In Zeekoevlei, Father John kept the tennis club going in the face of years of neglect and helped oversee its recent revival. He also worked tirelessly to rehabilitate Van Blommenstein Park. For many years, he and his wife Emma led the annual Inter-faith Carols by Candlelight services held at the Zeekoevlei Yacht Club. Those of us lucky enough to live on the water were accustomed to seeing Father John in his blue canoe paddling into the sunrise on summer mornings. This summer won’t be the same without him. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, Emma and children Sarah and Joseph.

The funeral service will be held at St Mark’s, District 6, on Thursday 11 July at 10h00. The family requests that, instead of flowers, indigenous plants be donated to continue John’s work at Van Blommenstein Park. For donations of plants, please contact Neil Major at 076 473 7095.

A memorial service will also be held on 20 July at St George’s Cathedral at 10am.

I will always remember John at the keyboard- calm, smiling and effortless- at Carols by Candlelight and at a musical evening in Peninsula road long, long ago. And I will salute him every time I walk in the VB park, which he has transformed.Love to Emma, Joseph and Sarah.

Father John Oliver was such a person to unite various communities and dissimilar faiths. I recall the time that he married my niece,Bronwyn who is Christian to Hakeem Kazim, who is Muslim at a private ceremony at the Strandloper in Langebaan. He later told me that this got him into all sorts of trouble with the churches’s hierarchy.

I want to express my condolonces to the family of Father John, especially his wife Emma and Children.

John did awesome work on the Van Blommenstein Park. I propose that in his honour and remembrance, we name a ‘spot’ after him on the beautiful trails he has rejuvenated.

Father John conducted my Mum’s memorial service in December at St Mark’s. We live in the UK and converesed by email until we met in December. What a gentle and wise soul. We were touched by how deeply genuine he was as person. I remember meeting with him and going through plans for Mum’s service. We agreed who would say what when, then with a twinkle in his eye he winked at me and said, “Don’t worry, we’ll play it by ear and God will take care of the rest” .. and he did! Our sincerest condolences to Father John’s family.

Ooh God what a loss, father Oliver was our Parish priest over 20 years ago in the St Anne’s Anglican Church in the small Agirculturaltown of Mazabuka in Zambia. He was so instrumental in organising the youth. He made a great musician out of my brother Oliver who has turned out to be a brilliant gospel singer, a multi talented player of musical instruments and he leads the choir in the Cathedral ofvthecNational Holy Cross in Lusaka. To Emma and the children, our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies. Davis Mataka
