Western Leopard Toad breeding migration

20 Aug Posted by in Uncategorized | 1 comment

The Western leopard toad breeding season is nearly upon us. There will be a lot of toads crossing the roads during this time and we would like to appeal to the public for help. This species is battling against extinction, so your help would be really meaningful.

Breeding activity lasts for a week or two. Calling usually starts towards the end of August on rainy nights at around 18h30. If you are able to volunteer your time to do a “toad patrol” for one or two nights for about 2 hours, please email your details and availability to Dagny Warmerdam at dagny@discoverymail.co.za. She will be co-ordinating the operation.

Thank you,

The Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei

    Greetings all,

This last weekend has brought some Toad Activity around the neighbourhood! mostly males on their way to the breeding site in Rondevlei to start their calling.

Both Saturday and Sunday nights, we have picked up 8 or so toads, mostly male on their annual migration. sadly we have also had a couple of casualties as we cannot be everywhere at once.

What this means is that there is likely to continue to be movement from now until the ‘big move’ when everyone scurries down to the breeding pools en masse once the males all start their calling.

Please assist by driving slowly, if you see a toad during this time, either help it across the road, or place it gently near the rondevlei fence – any side, they will find their way safely from there.

Thank you all for your efforts, please contact me if anyone is willing to assist during the next 2 weeks.

    Thank you so much,

    Dagny
