MURDER in Zeekoevlei

…And Now… Finally…HORROR in Zeekoevlei

I received a VERY disturbing email yesterday – please comment…

Last night we were on our way from our house to the yacht club just before 7:30pm when we spotted a leopard toad on the road outside Dee and Richard’s house. Dalton immediately stopped the car and put the hazards on while I jumped out of the car to move the toad off of the road. The toad by this stage was hopping vigorously towards the Rondevlei fence line. A large 4×4 type red bakkie came speeding down from the other direction and despite Dalton’s hazards and flashing lights as well as my crazy woman antics in the road, did not even slow down. It just drove straight over the toad, killing it instantly, and kept on going. It’s completely heart breaking as well as alarming that the bakkie did not even register our “hazard” behaviour.

There was some light however as I continued reading…

On a happier note, we were able to save a female toad on that same bend on our way back from the yacht club around midnight and this morning leopard toads are calling near to our house. In addition, we have spotted at least 4 leopard toads in our garden over the last few weeks – 2 males that I moved to the vlei side of the house and 2 others slightly apart from each other that hopped across our drive way last Thurs evening. I spotted another one a few days prior to that but I can’t say for sure that this was not one of the males that ended up at our front door.

I can only report here as this is community information but my “feelings” on the characters here involved may be found in the comments below.

You know I am feeling a bit antagonistic about this at the moment, it is not ignorance, if any one living in this area is still ignorant, it is because they choose to be and gentle chat and reminder and education is not going to make a blind bit of difference to them, get their number plates, name and shame them, tell them that they are pigs, puncture their tyres…

We should put up wanted posters around the vlei. Reward for the apprehension of wanted criminal. Could help as a PR exercise.

the unfortunate truth of this incident is that it happens all the time. Both Helen and I have encountered this fellow, and several others who do not give a damn about any life form, human, toad, or otherwise! it is a constant risk we face when we are out patrolling and moving toads. Despite our reflective vests and torches, motorists in our hood will aim for you, or increase speed. this particular lovely had been stopped last week by Ilsa, so he is well aware of the current Toad situation.

it is a great pity that the speedbumps have not been approved for Peninsula road. Does anyone know why?
    thanks for this post!

Speedbumps on the bend at Richard’s corner are a minimum!
Why should anyone oppose? Unless your ride is so ‘slammed’ that they can’t be negotiated? in which case you can’t drive down Victoria Road :-)!

Sadly, ‘big-foot’ bakkies can rush over bumps – as well as toads – the guards should have NUMBERS of offending/speeding vehicles and be instructed to “stop & educate” these vehicles. Daily.

An info leaflet for such purposes, and a courteous chat at the window of incoming vehicles would require a STOP at the cones. Which would reduce speed up to the blind bend, perhaps?
