17 Oct Posted by in Environment | Comments

For those of you that walk / run down to the Zeekoevlei weir, please could you keep an eye out for, and remove the plant Vicia benghalensis, otherwise known by the common name, Purple vetch.

This species is an invasive annual herb with a climbing stem which is coated in hairs, often densely, making the plant appear silvery white. Each leaf is made up of several pairs of elongated leaflets which measure up to 3 cm in length. Multiple seeds are contained in a flat, hairy legume pod up to 3.5 cm long.

If you come across this plant, kindly remove it, and either take it with you for disposal (best option) or alternatively leave it on the path.
