Proposal to Secure Sponsorship & Funding for:
Hot Water in Zeekoevlei – 2013 Concert
Executive Summary
The Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei (FoZR) are planning a waste-wise and eco-friendly fundraiser.
The music festival features the well known Cape Town band Hot Water, along with supporting bands provided by the Barleycorn Music Club, who will be performing at the Zeekoevlei Yacht Club on 9 March 2013 from 17h00. Over 500 nature lovers are expected to attend. The event’s main objective is to raise funds to address the need for a sustainable water quality management plan and a job creation project for the False Bay Nature Reserve (FBNR).
What is the False Bay Nature Reserve?
The 2 300ha False Bay Nature Reserve is awaiting proclamation as a provincial nature reserve. It consists of six areas: Rondevlei Nature Reserve, Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve, Strandfontein Important Birding Area, Pelican Park Section, Slangetjiebos Section and Zandwolf Coastal Section.
Breeding fish eagles occur here as do a subspecies of butterfly, the Unique Ranger, which is only found along the coast between Muizenburg and Zandvlei. No fewer than 19 endangered plants species are found in the area, 2 of which are found no where else on earth.
The False Bay Nature Reserve is in the process of applying for international RAMSAR status on the basis of the area’s conservation value.
Zeekoevlei, is a 250ha freshwater lake located 23km south of Cape Town in the southwestern corner of the densely urbanised Cape Flats. The wetland is the largest remaining open water body in Cape Town. Zeekoevlei was proclaimed a local authority nature reserve in June 2000 and is one of the youngest conservation areas in Cape Town.
On the western and southern shorelines, two environmental education centres are used to provide more than 60% of the City of Cape Town’s environmental education in local reserves.
A peninsula separates Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve from Rondevlei Nature Reserve. Proclaimed a bird sanctuary in 1952, up to 235 different species of birds have been sighted at Rondevlei. The area is also home to the endangered Western Leopard Toad, which is only found in Cape Town’s southern suburbs and Hermanus. Rondevlei has the only group of hippos in the greater Cape Town area.
The Strandfontein pans are the fifth most important wetland bird habitat in Southern Africa. Nine Red Data Book listed bird species have been recorded at the Strandfontein pans.
Who are the Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei?
The Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei is a registered non-profit community organization affiliated to the Western Cape branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society (WESSA). FoZR assists Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei Nature Reserve authorities with the conservation of the False Bay Nature Reserve. FoZR is also involved in the regular removal of aliens, fynbos rehabilitation projects, litter cleanups, animal and bird counts, input into Environmental Impact Assessments and environmental education. We were established as Friends group in 2007 and were registered as an NPO on 1 July 2008. Hot Water in Zeekoevlei 2013 will be our seventh fund-raising festival.
What are Our Challenges?
South Africa is a semi-arid country. If global warming intensifies, South Africa is going to be even drier. By 2025, experts predict, water demand will outstrip supply by some 52%. Wetlands help purify South Africa’s water, control erosion and flooding and are home to a wide variety of fauna and flora. Agriculture and urbanization have destroyed or severely degraded between 35% and 60% of South Africa’s wetlands. Thus the challenge is to maintain and reinstate the functions of wetlands like Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei.
The Cape Flats was once dotted with seasonal and perennial wetlands, which supported unique communities of plants and animals. However, an estimated 97% of these systems have been lost, largely to accommodate housing developments. Today, the Cape Flats lowlands have the highest concentration of threatened plants per area of remaining vegetation in the world!
While the False Bay Nature Reserve’s boundaries are increasing, so are the pressures of urbanization. A new 3 200-house suburb is being built on the eastern shore of Zeekoevlei. The increased environmental impact on the reserve will test the already dwindling resources offered by the City of Cape Town. We aim to raise funds to supplement those resources.
What are Our Objectives?
With this event, FoZR aims to:
- Contribute to a sustainable management plan for the water bodies of the False Bay Ecology Park
- Raise funds for ongoing dredging of the wetlands and related job creation ventures
- Raise community awareness of the importance of nature conservation
- Provide environmental education to the surrounding communities on a wide variety of topics related to flora and fauna thriving in the FBNR
- Highlight the relevance of urban nature reserves, which provide city dwellers with the opportunity to experience the natural environment, and thus help to ensure the reserves’ continued survival
Our minimum goal after expenses is to raise R100 000. Funds generated will be predominantly directed towards the greatest immediate threat to Zeekoevlei, namely the water quality.
