I received the following official statement from CoCT regarding the Hippos loose in our pond, in my humble opinion it is worse than useless as it tells us very little. Somehow it looks to me like the managers, Dalton for one, are being restricted in what they can tell us, its bland, it is supposed to be factual (pardon my skepticism) but its the only official word so far.

NOTICE TO VLEI RESIDENTS AND USERS ABOUT HIPPOS

October 2012

There have been a number of media statements regarding two hippos that are presently in Zeekoevlei. These are both thought to be young male animals that escaped from Rondevlei after sections of fence were stolen.
There is a nightly monitoring team tracking the animals; with plans and an operation to deal with the animals about to be put into action.
Please:
Report any sightings of the animals to Nature Conservation South at 083 499 1717
Please do not:
Go on to Zeekoevlei 2 hours before or after sunrise or sunset
Paddle close to the shore line or amongst reed beds
Under any circumstances approach a hippo

Message I got this morning

Hi Dee,

Contractors just arrived today to work on tearoom. They will be replacing the ceiling, lighting, re-varnishing the timber and painting the roof.

I have informed Faye, she would prefer to shut down op’s until work is completed, which should be about 2 weeks. I will keep you updated.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Please could you put out a notice to explain that the tearoom will be closed for renovations and apologize for the inconvenience.
