ZeekoeFees 2009 Fundraising

ZeekoeFees 2009
The primary goal of the Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei is to raise money to support Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei Nature Reserves.

Our main fundraising event is the ZeekoeFees, which was held for the third time last year in November. It was our most ambitious endeavour to date. We attracted over R20 000 worth of sponsorship (see logos below). In addition, we ran a zero-waste event with recycling facilities and innovative biodegradable water sachets pioneered by the Friends of Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei and Green Home.

We made our biggest profit ever – R15 352.

Community Spirit
Not only did we offer a craft market, music festival, food and bar facilities but we also had the first ever Zeekoevlei Hip-athon, which comprised an individual and team mountain bike and running biathlon and a mountain bike route. The idea was to draw more people to the Fees from around the Peninsula. While the number of entrants that we were hoping for did not materialize, we had extremely good feedback from those people that did participate. The quality of prizes sourced by Mr Jaffer of the Shell petrol station and supplied by the business people of Grassy Park went beyond that of bigger and more established events. The quality of the music supplied by the Barleycorn Folk Club was first-class and many of the prize-winners said that they would be back next year, with friends in tow. The community spirit and environmental awareness generated by the event is impossible to quantify.

How are we going to spend the money?

  • A breeding pair of ostriches and two juveniles for Rondevlei Nature Reserve and the area near the model airplane club
  • Pruning saws for ongoing alien clearing and veld rehabilitation
  • Contribution towards the salary of Rondevlei’s Assistant Environmental Education Officer
  • Contribution towards the wages of a temporary worker to clean up and remove aliens from Van Blommenstein Park.

Feedback Please
As I am sure you can appreciate, the ZeekoeFees takes an enormous amount of time and effort to organize. A handful of committee members, an already stretched nature conservation staff and a few co-opted Zeekoevlei residents pull this event together. If it is to continue, we need the support and the active participation of the greater Zeekoevlei community. We would appreciate your feedback on the event. Please send an email to Dee Cranswick .
